South African new vehicle sales are booming, with 2025 set to be one of the industry’s strongest years of the past decade.

November alone saw a year-on-year increase of 12.5%, with 54,896 shiny new vehicles finding homes - read the full story here - but last month was kinder to some than others. One thing’s for sure: Chinese and Indian-built vehicles are vying for market domination.

Here are five interesting trends that have emerged.

Tiggo 4 takes SUV crown: For the second month in a row, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has overtaken the Toyota Corolla Cross as South Africa’s top-selling SUV.

In November, the compact Tiggo range saw a total volume of 1,838 units, versus the Corolla’s 1,651. Keep in mind, though, that these figures include the Tiggo Cross, which is a newer-generation version of the Tiggo 4, albeit a much slower seller on local shores.

However, Toyota still completed the SUV podium, with its Urban Cruiser (1,325 units) taking third spot ahead of the Suzuki Fronx and Haval Jolion.

Jetour T2 makes an impressive start: Jetour’s recently-launched T2 series managed an impressive volume of 545 units in its first month of sales.

The rugged-looking SUV, which starts at R569,900, also outsold the closely related, but more urban-oriented T1, which managed a volume of 81 units. Jetour managed a total volume of 1,235, ranking 15th among the manufacturers.

GWM’s bakkie moves up the ranks: The recently revised GWM P-Series, which usually sees a monthly volume of around 300 units, managed an impressive 665 units in November, pushing it ahead of the Nissan Navara (511) and Volkswagen Amarok (401).

Six Chinese brands made the top 20 manufacturers’ list in November, with GWM SA (2,534) and Chery Auto (2,506) managing sixth and seventh places.

Toyota’s Starlet sells up a storm: If you add up the November sales of the Toyota Starlet hatchback and the closely-related Starlet Cross, you have a total volume of 2,704 units, putting it close behind the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, which wins the passenger car sales race with 2,862 units.

Indian-built cars dominate Top 20: Another interesting fact is that 10 of the 20 best-selling vehicles in November are built in India. These include the Toyota Starlet, Urban Cruiser and Vitz models as well as Suzuki’s Swift and Fronx, Hyundai’s Grand i10, and the Kia Sonet, Mahindra Pik-Up and Nissan Magnite.

The very top of the vehicle sales list, however, still belongs to a pair of South African-built vehicles: the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Polo Vivo, with the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Corolla Cross ensuring we have five SA-built vehicles in the top 10.
