South Africa is more than capable of hosting major international motorsport events, this is according to FIM (Federation of International Motorcycling) Africa President Marco Comana.

Comana was speaking after the World Supercross Championship finale held in Cape Town over the weekend.

By all accounts, it was a successful hosting of the event in the Mother City.

It was also the first time the World Supercross Championship was held in Africa.

Historic Supercross Event in Africa: Cape Town Stadium Shines

“For us at FIM Africa, it is a dream come true. We waited a long time to host an event like this in Africa,” Comana told SportsBoom.co.za

“It is the first time we have had a Supercross event on the continent. Cape Town was the right idea and the ideal place.”

The honour of hosting the historic event fell to the Cape Town Stadium, which drew similar praise from Comana.

“Cape Town Stadium is probably the best stadium in Africa.”

South Africa’s Potential as a Future Formula 1 Venue and Motorsport Hub

For the last few years, South Africa has been touted as a future venue for a Formula 1 event as early as 2026 or 2027. Comana hinted that could actually come to fruition.

“The event this year was the beginning. Next year we will see other international motorsport championships coming to South Africa,” said Comana.

SA MotoGP rider Brad Binder was similarly impressed with the event in Cape Town.

“South Africa is a country that loves sport in general,” said Binder.

“It was awesome to have the World Supercross Championship here for the first time—at least that I know of. I will for sure be back next year; I am a massive fan.”
