Ward Councillor Eddie Andrews handed over 23 school bags filled with stationery in Steurhof, on Tuesday January 14, to ensure scholars are prepared for the 2025 school year.
The recipients are part of the Decision Affects Destinies (DAD) youth mentorship programme, a collaboration between Mr Andrews and the Hillsong Africa Foundation (HAF), funded by a ward allocation grant.
The programme mentors children and youth to develop leadership skills and make informed decisions. Programme activities include hikes, excursions and an annual leadership camp.
“These scholars have shown strong commitment over the past six months by attending Wednesday workshops, hikes and excursions throughout the year, as well as the December camp. They have earned their school bags filled with essential stationery such as soft- and hard-cover books, pens, pencils, colour pencils, highlighters, math sets and so much more,” said Mr Andrews.
“The goal is to remove obstacles so children can focus on school and making decisions that shape their futures.”
He encouraged more children and youth in Ward 73 to join the programme, saying, “I know the parents of these children can now breathe easier knowing their kids have what they need for school.”
Hillsong Africa Foundation managing director Tanya Sampson said: “We do not want a student to miss out on an educational opportunity due to a lack of resources. We believe that by being fully equipped with the tools they need, especially at the start of the year, will set them up for a strong school year.”
The DAD programme is open to children in Ward 73.
