A 20-YEAR-OLD Galeshewe man who left a trail of blood and heartbreak across Kimberley’s streets will spend the next five decades behind bars following his conviction for two brutal murders and a string of violent assaults.
Jamaine Long’s reign of terror began when he was still a minor, but his crimes were anything but juvenile.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said that in the early hours of February 13, 2022, chaos erupted at a tavern in Sobantu Township where a patron was stabbed to death and two others sustained serious wounds after a violent attack. Long was identified as the suspect and released into parental custody after being arrested and charged.
Just over a year later, in March 2023, there was another violent incident. In Santa Zone 2, the Galeshewe police were again called to a stabbing - and once again, Long was the name that surfaced. The victim later died in hospital, cementing Long’s reputation as a danger to the community.
The cases were consolidated, and the Kimberley High Court heard a chilling account of repeated brutality. Long faced eight charges and was found guilty on all counts, including two murders and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
His sentence: 40 years for the killings and 10 more for the assaults. He was also declared unfit to ever possess a firearm.
The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the outcome, crediting the relentless work of the Galeshewe Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit for ensuring justice was served.
