A 33-YEAR-OLD man from Belmont will spend the next 15 years behind bars after being sentenced in the Kimberley Regional Court for the attempted murder of his wife – a case that police say highlights the urgency of tackling gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the Northern Cape.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the sentencing follows a harrowing attack that took place on November 23, 2023.
After a domestic dispute the night before at their home in Hopetown, the man reportedly tracked down his 26-year-old wife to a farm near Belmont. In a violent outburst witnessed by her mother and sister, he stabbed her multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Thanks to the swift action by law enforcement and a thorough investigation, he was apprehended shortly after the incident. In addition to the 15-year sentence for attempted murder, he received six months for trespassing – with both sentences to run concurrently. He has also been declared unfit to own a firearm.
The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, praised Detective Sergeant Kagisho Carlse of the Belmont Detectives for his outstanding investigative work. She also underscored the importance of speaking out against domestic violence and thanked the National Prosecuting Authority for its ongoing partnership in tackling GBVF.
Otola added that the sentence should stand as a firm warning to anyone who believes they can commit such crimes with impunity.
