An inmate has been killed and several officials injured following a violent altercation during a search operation at the Oudtshoorn Medium A Correctional Centre.

Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, said the operation was carried out earlier this week and offenders from Room 005 of A-Section refused to comply with officials.

"With the necessary intervention, officials were able to gain access and continue with the search. Tensions rose as some offenders resisted being searched, but officials managed to stabilise the situation and complete the operation. Several contraband items, including cellphones and narcotics, were confiscated," he said.

Singabakho stated that the day following the search, inmates from Room 005 attacked officials during unlock time.

"Eighteen officials were on duty. Four of them sustained injuries, including stab wounds to the face, head, and back," Nxumalo said.

An inmate involved in the fight sustained injuries and died despite receiving medical care.

The man's death will now form part of an investigation.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale has condemned the incident.

"The safety of officials and inmates remains our foremost priority. Incidents of this nature are deeply concerning, and we are committed to thoroughly investigating all contributing factors," the Commissioner said.

Offenders implicated in the stabbings have been placed in single cells pending disciplinary action. A-Unit has been re-searched, resulting in the confiscation of additional weapons. All offender activities and visits have been suspended until further notice.
