President Xi Jinping called on the nation to persevere and move forward resolutely in the pursuit of Chinese modernisation. Speaking at a reception in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Xi—who also serves as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission—highlighted the importance of sustained effort and determination. China’s National Day is officially observed on 1 October.

A Historic Mission: Rejuvenation of the Nation

In his address, Xi described the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as an extraordinary endeavour, urging citizens to seize opportunities with steadfast energy despite the challenges ahead. He reflected on the 76-year journey since the establishment of the People’s Republic, noting the CPC’s leadership in guiding the country to remarkable achievements through resilience and continuous effort.

Commemorating Past Struggles and Lessons Learned

Xi recalled recent commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the broader World Anti-Fascist War, highlighting how these historic milestones have fostered patriotism and collective resolve. He stressed the need to draw lessons from history to drive further national development.

Progress Amid Challenges

Amid a challenging international and domestic environment, Xi noted China’s recent progress in deepening reforms, fostering high-quality development, improving public welfare, and strengthening Party governance.

Looking Ahead: The 15th Five-Year Plan

Looking forward, he emphasised the importance of the upcoming fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, which will review proposals for the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), urging careful planning and implementation of its objectives to secure tangible progress towards socialist modernisation.

Supporting Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan

Xi underscored the continued application of the “one country, two systems” framework, advocating for support to Hong Kong and Macao in integrating more fully into national development, enhancing their economies, and improving the quality of life for residents. He also called for intensified cross-strait exchanges, a firm stance against “Taiwan independence” separatist movements, and safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the face of global shifts not seen in a century, Xi stressed China’s commitment to genuine multilateralism, promoting initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilisation Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative, while collaborating with other nations to build a shared future for humanity.
