A Petrusville man who raped a 76-year-old grandmother while visiting her home has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars in what police have described as a victory for elderly protection.
The Philipstown Magistrate's Court handed down the sentence on Friday, March 7.
The incident took place on December 3, 2023, when the accused, Daniel Williams, was visiting the victim and her husband.
When the husband left to go to the shop, Williams forcefully raped the elderly woman and fled the scene.
"The husband returned and found his wife crying and immediately reported the incident to the police," said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock.
Williams was arrested two days later, and police successfully opposed bail.
He was convicted and sentenced in the Philipstown Regional Court, where his name was also entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
The commissioner for the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended Detective Sergeant Willy Isaacs from the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for his work in securing the conviction.
“All efforts will be intensified by SAPS investigators to ensure that justice is served,” said Kock.
