Police confirmed the man taken in for questioning after a nine-year-old girl from Hanover Park went missing has officially been charged.

The man, who has been out on parole for two months, was found in the company of the young girl in his residence on Tuesday evening.

This caused the community to erupt in chaos, demanding justice and baying for his blood.

The nine-year-old girl was last seen between 3pm and 4pm.

On Wednesday morning, Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the 51-year-old man had been taken in for questioning.

However, just before 1pm, Twigg confirmed that the man had been formally charged.

“The 51-year-old suspect was formally charged for rape and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, May 15, 2025. The possibility that more charges may be added is not excluded,” Twigg said.

Public Relations Officer for the Faith and Hope Missing Persons, Dennis George, said they got the call at about 5pm about the girl who had gone missing.

“The suspect had sent the girl to the shop with R20 to buy him milk. On her way to the shop, she got a friend and told her she would be back; she would just be taking the milk back,” George told IOL.
