The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that it is investigating an attempted murder case following an apparent hit targeting controversial businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
IOL reported earlier about allegations that Mogotsi was travelling in a vehicle that came under fire in Vosloorus, Gauteng. The vehicle is said to have been struck by more than eight bullets.
On Tuesday morning, SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the alleged attack happened on Monday night at around 10 pm.
“At around 10 o’clock last night, we were called by a security official belonging to a private security (company), alerting us that there was a shooting around the area. We immediately dispatched a team of police officers and, on arrival, we found the security official together with Mr Brown Mogotsi, who alleges there was a shooting — that there was another car, a white bakkie, and those individuals (in the bakkie) started shooting at his vehicle while he was allegedly inside,” Mathe said.

She added that Mogotsi was encouraged to open a case but told police he was too traumatised at the time.
“He said did not feel safe. He has promised us that at around 8 o’clock this morning, he will present himself to the Vosloorus police station to open a case formally,” said Mathe.
SAPS has since seized the Chevrolet sedan which Mogotsi was travelling in, and dispatched a forensic team to collect evidence from the scene.
“We are investigating a case of attempted murder for now, as the SAPS, and we have seized the vehicle. When we got the report at around 10 pm last night, we dispatched a team of forensic experts to gather physical evidence that will assist us to solve this particular case and to determine what actually happened here,” Mathe said.

Mogotsi, a businessman from the North West province, has been the subject of several investigations and was recently linked to testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into alleged political interference in the criminal justice system.
In October, police raided his business premises in Seweding village near Mahikeng as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption and political interference. After the raid, Mogotsi told the media he feared for his life, describing what he called targeted harassment by law enforcement officials.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
