A 54-year-old woman is set to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court following her arrest for operating an unlicensed pharmacy and medical practice from a home in Duncan Village.
The arrest took place during a multi-disciplinary raid on Monday, April 27, after authorities received tips regarding the illegal distribution of medicine and unauthorized healthcare services.
The operation involved the Eastern Cape Missing Persons Unit, East London K9 Unit, and Buffalo City Environmental Health Services.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, confirmed that the raid yielded significant evidence of the illicit practice.

“During the operation, authorities seized a substantial quantity of medication, injections, a speed point device, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The estimated street value of the confiscated medicines is R85,500,” Gantana said.
The suspect faces multiple charges under the Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 and the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974.
Specifically, she is accused of possessing scheduled substances and practicing without registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, praised the tactical team for dismantling the operation.
“The proliferation of unlicensed medical practices in our communities is not merely a regulatory violation; it is a direct threat to the lives and health of vulnerable citizens, who are often exploited with false promises of affordable care,” Ncata said.
A criminal case has been registered, and investigations remain ongoing. Police have indicated that further charges may be added as the probe into the Duncan Village premises continues.
