Every December, when the service dining rooms close for their Christmas break, a quiet crisis unfolds on the streets.

Hundreds of people who rely on that daily meal suddenly have nowhere to go.

For anyone trying to survive outside, it becomes one of the most painful times of the year.

That is why The Hope Exchange, operated by U-turn, steps in with Feed5000.

From December 15 to January 11, their doors at 14a Roeland Street open every afternoon to offer something many people have not felt in days.

A hot, dignifying meal. A moment of kindness. A reminder that they matter.

And for some, like Enver, that meal becomes much more than food.

Enver grew up groomed into gangsterism and drugs.

By the time life became unmanageable, he found himself homeless and struggling to survive.

“When my friend told me about U-turn, I was like, ‘Do they give food?’ And that was the only reason I really went there, to get something to eat, because life was hard at that time,” says Enver.

“When I got there, the people were very welcoming. They treated me like I was something. It was a big change from when I was on the street because people treated me like I was nothing, so I felt like I was accepted. And then I started to learn about how to get my self-worth back, how to be a person in society again, and it all started making sense to me that this is what I really wanted.”

He arrived hungry. He found dignity. And today, Enver is sober, working at the U-turn store in Parow and building a life filled with purpose and hope.

His story is a reminder that change often begins with one simple act: offering a person a warm meal when they need it most.

This Christmas, U-turn is asking the public to provide a gift that can open that same door for someone else.

Your support offers a meal today and the possibility of a new path tomorrow.

  • R250 feeds one person for the full Christmas period. It gives someone a hot meal today and hope for tomorrow.
  • R500 supports meals for several people this Christmas and helps many more feel seen and supported.
  • R2,000 sponsors an entire day of meals, creating a ripple of impact for dozens of people who depend on Feed5000.

Or you can simply give what you can. Every contribution matters more than you might realise.

Visit homeless.org.za to make a donation.

Feed5000 meets an immediate, urgent need, but the ripple effect continues long after the festive season ends.

Your gift helps U-turn continue walking with people as they journey through addiction recovery, therapy, work readiness and into stable employment and independence.

This festive season, one meal really can be the beginning of a whole new chapter.

For 25 years, U-turn has been creating an effective life change pathway for people experiencing homelessness.

Their skills-based programme, designed by a team of occupational therapists, social workers, counsellors, trainers, homeless support workers and life coaches, offers long-term rehabilitation and reintegration rooted in Christian faith and compassion.
