A total of 58 employees of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole in the Eastern Cape used fake qualifications to get jobs, the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) claimed on Monday.
Provincial union spokesperson Siphiwo Ndunyana said this emerged from an audit completed in 2006 and tabled at a council meeting last week.
Samwu had asked for the investigation but was never informed of its outcome, he said.
"They (the council) tabled the results only last week because they did not want the information to reach us."
Ndunyana said disciplinary steps should be taken against employees concerned.
According to him, the council had recommended that no action be taken against the workers.
Municipal spokesperson Lourens Schoeman would not comment on the matter, saying: "I cannot discuss the matter which was leaked to the media... it is not for public consumption." - Sapa
