President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to personally address a series of explosive allegations made by KZN Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, which implicate high-ranking government and police officials — which some are his party members.

Speaking from the BRICS Summit in Brazil on Monday, Ramaphosa acknowledged being blindsided by the revelations but assured the public that he would give the matter his ‘eagle-eyed attention’ upon returning to South Africa.

“I was not aware of it, that it was coming and obviously it is a matter that I will be dealing with when I get home. I will need to look at it more closely and have a thorough discussion with a number of people and thereafter, there will be a clear way forward.

“This is not a matter that we should ignore. It is a serious matter, it has to do with the security of our people but it also has to do with our adherence to the rule of law,” he said.

He stated that those who have done wrong should be thoroughly dealt with, highlighting the people’s role in the process.

The President’s remarks come in the wake of a bombshell media briefing held by Mkhwanazi in Durban on Sunday.

The commissioner alleged that top law enforcement figures — including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya — are entangled in a powerful syndicate backed by drug cartels and influential business interests.

According to Mkhwanazi, the criminal network has deeply infiltrated South Africa’s organised crime landscape, compromising the integrity of key policing institutions.

The allegations have sent shockwaves through the political and security establishment, prompting calls for an urgent, independent investigation.

The ANC has also called on Ramaphosa to act effectively without fear or favour.
