Day two of the Madlanga Commission detonated with explosive testimony from KZN Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who directly implicated two MPs in political interference with Crime Intelligence operations, revealed that crucial evidence he submitted to the Zondo Commission in 2011 was ignored.
Mkhwanazi took the stand and didn’t flinch. He named DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard and NCC leader Fadiel Adams as politicians who allegedly abused their positions to interfere in operational matters within Crime Intelligence.
He accused Barnard of violating legal protocols and “inciting attacks on Crime Intelligence,” despite being fully aware that any concerns should have gone through the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence.
Mkhwanazi said such conduct forced intelligence officers into the public domain, risking exposure of classified state information.”
As for Adams, Mkhwanazi claimed he gained access to classified Crime Intelligence information without authorisation.
In a startling revelation, Mkhwanazi said he had submitted a detailed affidavit to the Zondo Commission back in 2011, while serving as Acting National Commissioner but he was ignored.
He said of the same political manipulation and abuse of Crime Intelligence structures.
“Unfortunately, I was never invited to testify,” he said.
“The same patterns and modus operandi from back then still exist today.”
He warned that failure to enforce proper intelligence oversight leads to rogue actors leaking or defending classified material in public, undermining national security and law enforcement credibility.
