KZN Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has fired back at forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan, linking his recent public criticism to a "suspicious" relationship with National Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

Testifying at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria, Mkhwanazi accused O’Sullivan of targeting him for years, claiming the outspoken investigator's motives were personal and potentially retaliatory.

“We know that Paul O’Sullivan, immediately after addressing the nation on July 6, went on television and spoke badly about me. He has been doing this for years,” said Mkhwanazi.

“His relationship with Sibiya is an open secret. So, could it be because I mentioned his friend who made him respond like this?”

Mkhwanazi said the attacks against him in the public domain, including on popular podcast platforms, were part of a broader smear campaign fuelled by these connections.

While concluding his three-day testimony, the commissioner made it clear he remained open to further appearances if the Commission requires.

He also threw down the gauntlet to O’Sullivan, challenging him to appear before the inquiry to substantiate his claims.

“He must come here and argue that what I have presented is false — and explain why he says so,” Mkhwanazi stated.

The Madlanga Commission heard testimony from Mkhwanazi about corruption, abuse of power, and deep-rooted factionalism in the police force.
