A homeless man was arrested in Sea Point on Monday morning after he allegedly struck a female parking marshal on the head with a glass bottle, leaving her bleeding heavily.
The brutal attack, which occurred around 8.30am, marks the second violent incident against a woman in the area in just three days.
The Sea Point City Improvement District (CID), which manages local safety operations, confirmed its officers detained the suspect minutes after the victim ran into their offices seeking help.
According to CID chairperson Jacques Weber, the injured woman managed to describe her attacker, despite being in severe pain.
“Despite her visible distress and heavy bleeding from a head injury, she was able to inform CID officers that she had been attacked by a homeless male who struck her with a glass bottle before fleeing the scene,” said Weber.
Weber added that rapid response by CID officers and technology played a key role in tracking down the suspect.
"The CID’s Security Manager, Bernard, led a team that reviewed CCTV footage to identify the attack’s location and the suspect’s appearance."
He said the information was immediately relayed to CID and Law Enforcement personnel via radio.
“Our security team... sprang into action and successfully located and detained the suspect, who was then handed over to the Sea Point SAPS,” said Weber.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched from the CID control room.
According to Weber, CSO Medical personnel and members of the Fire Department arrived promptly and stabilised the victim at the scene until she was transported to Somerset Hospital by ambulance.
Sea Point CID COO Heather Tager commended the coordinated response of the emergency and security services.
“Thank you to all responding services and the SPCID Security Team for their rapid and professional response. Their swift action ensured the victim received immediate medical attention and that the suspect was apprehended without delay.”
Weber condemned the violence, noting the CID’s ongoing commitment to public safety.
“This kind of violent behaviour has no place in our community... Through the use of technology and a visible, strong security presence, we will continue to close the net on criminals operating in our area.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the arrest of a 32-year-old male, now in custody on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
"He will appear in court once charged,” said Twigg.
The Monday morning incident follows another disturbing attack in Sea Point just two days earlier, when a woman was stabbed with a pair of scissors on Beach Road on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the arrest of a 28-year-old man, who was apprehended near the scene by members of Law Enforcement and Metro Police.
“The victim received medical treatment and the incident was reported to Sea Point SAPS,” said Van Wyk.
Police said the man has been linked to a separate drug-related case.
The case has been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further instruction, and investigators are awaiting the court’s decision.
The Sea Point CID urged residents to report all suspicious activity immediately and to remain vigilant in public spaces. They also reiterated their support for continued multi-agency collaboration between private security, law enforcement, emergency services, and local community organisations.
“We will not tolerate violent attacks in our neighbourhood. Our security personnel are committed to keeping Sea Point safe,” said Weber.
