Cape Town International Airport has reached an early travel milestone, surpassing one million passengers in October, a figure usually only achieved during December’s festive peak.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) announced the achievement on Monday, calling it a reflection of the growing strength of the country’s tourism and aviation industries.

“This achievement, usually seen only during the busy December period, signals an early and strong start to the peak travel season,” ACSA said.

Acting Regional General Manager Thabo Phateng days the record reflects both the trust travellers place in ACSA’s airports and the dedication of operational teams

He said the airport’s focus, as the festive season approaches, remains on maintaining efficient, safe, and welcoming services for all passengers.

The early growth in passenger numbers comes as South Africa’s tourism industry rebounds strongly, with Cape Town maintaining its position as one of the country’s most visited destinations.

ACSA credited “ongoing collaboration with the Air Access Steering Committee” for supporting this growth, alongside strong coordination among airport partners, airlines, ground handlers, and the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS).

“Strong collaboration among airport partners, airlines, ground handlers, and Air Traffic and Navigation Services has been crucial in ensuring smooth operations during this high-demand period,” ACSA said.

The airport, which serves as the gateway to the Western Cape, has seen sustained investment in infrastructure and technology improvements to handle rising passenger volumes.

Phateng said teams remain committed to ensuring smooth operations despite capacity pressures.

“Even while operating at capacity during peak times, our teams remain dedicated to providing a safe, efficient, and positive experience for all travellers.”

With the summer travel season now in full swing, ACSA said Cape Town International is working closely with airlines, border authorities, and service providers to maintain “the highest levels of safety, comfort, and hospitality throughout the season.”

The company thanked passengers and partners for their cooperation as it manages growing demand ahead of the festive period
