A two-year-old girl from Montford, Chatsworth, is in critical condition after falling from a balcony at her crèche.
Aariya Sewnarian was rushed to a high-care unit at a Durban hospital, where she remains in stable but critical condition.
According to her father, Atholl Brett Sewnarain, Aariya suffered a fractured skull, which caused an extradural hematoma and internal bleeding.
She underwent an emergency craniotomy to evacuate the hematoma.
Aariya, born in February 2023, attended a crèche in Chatsworth, KZN, for about two months.
On March 6th, 2025, Aariya’s mother, Shivana Sewnarain, received a call from the crèche principal, requesting her to pick up Aariya after the child fell onto the concrete while playing outside.
A second call reportedly stated that the fall occurred due to a fight between two children.
However, Sewnarain disputes the crèche's version of events, claiming that his daughter had been left unsupervised on the first-floor balcony.
After reviewing CCTV footage, Sewnarain alleges that Aariya fell several meters to the ground while playing alone.
An informant later claimed that the creche deleted the CCTV footage to cover up the incident, although this has not been confirmed.
Police are unaware of the incident.
