Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he had a "good" phone call with US President Donald Trump and the two leaders agreed to put the implementation of the new tariffs on Canada on hold for the next 30 days while the countries are working out a plan to combat cross-border crime.
"I just had a good call with President Trump," Trudeau said in a X post on Monday.
"Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together."
Trudeau said that Canada will begin implementing a $1.3 billion border plan that will include reinforcing the border with new choppers and technology. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel will be deployed by Canada to protect the border, the Canadian prime minister said.
Additionally, Trudeau said that the Canadian government pledged to designate a Fentanyl Czar and allocate $200 million to establish a Joint Strike Force aimed at tackling cartels, organised crime, and the fentanyl crisis.
