Pretoria - The community of Mabopane are not backing down from their planned protest outside Sun International’s Time Square at Menlyn Maine tomorrow.
The residents, who protested outside Goldrush @ Morula, formerly Morula Sun Hotel and Casino, last Thursday, say they are upset because promises made during the approval of the transfer of the licence from Mabopane to Time Square had not been met.
Khanyiso Nhloko of the Mabopane Farmers Co-operative said that following the public hearings in 2014 regarding the relocation, there were various conditions to be met by all parties.
However, he said the community had yet to see any benefit to the Goldrush area or the community to the tune of the agreed amount of R950 million social obligation.
Gauteng Gambling Board spokesperson Wisani Ngobeni said there were no compliance issues, but Nhloko said they would go ahead with the protest.
“We have also in the past tried to contact Gauteng Gambling Board chief executive Steven Ngubeni, and to date we still haven’t received a single response. So come Friday we will be shutting down both Goldrush and Time Square.”
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba confirmed they had received an application for a protest by the organisation for tomorrow. He said the exact details of the application and finer details regarding the protest would be dealt with during a scheduled meeting.
