The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola, has publicly backed law enforcement officers as they respond to escalating criminal violence across the nation.
This stance comes in response to a troubling series of incidents involving heavily armed criminals who blatantly flout the law and engage in dangerous confrontations with police, prompting calls for a robust law enforcement response.
“For as long as criminals attack police officers, the police will respond decisively as empowered by relevant legislation that governs the work of the police.”
Masemola remarked during a recent statement addressing the ongoing threat posed by violent offenders.
His comments echo the concerns of many police officers who risk their lives daily to protect citizens and maintain law and order.
Masemola’s remarks were underscored by alarming statistics indicating that since April 1, 2024, a tragic total of 21 police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty.
He detailed that this significant loss highlights not only the dangers faced by law enforcement but also the urgent need for community solidarity in combating rampant criminality.
“It is imperative that community members and civil society rally behind the police to confront life-threatening criminal acts,” he urged.
The commissioner also expressed dismay over what he characterized as a disconcerting trend of statements defending criminals, coupled with a noticeable silence surrounding the deaths of police officers while serving in their duty.
Supporting officers, he stated, is crucial, especially as they often encounter life-threatening situations while safeguarding the public.
“Innocent community members are also at risk and sometimes fall victim to this violence as bystanders,” he added, emphasizing the collateral damage of unchecked criminal activities.
Section 205 of the South African Constitution mandates the SAPS to prevent and combat crime, maintain public order, and protect citizens and their property.
It is explained that the legal framework empowers police action and serves as a foundation for their ongoing commitment to public safety. In response to the escalating crime statistics, the police have ramped up their enforcement efforts, resulting in over 1.2 million arrests since the initiation of high-density Operation Shanela.
This initiative targets a range of serious offences, including murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, demonstrating the SAPS's relentless commitment to restoring order and safety across the country.
