Soweto will commemorate the 49th anniversary of the June 16 Uprising with a revival of Sarafina!, the musical that highlighted youth resistance during apartheid.

Joburg City Theatres, in partnership with the Soweto Theatre, will host a three-day event from June 14 to 16, featuring workshops, arts showcases, and a live performance of the musical.

“We are reclaiming Soweto’s place as the epicentre of youth activism and creative resistance,” said Dada Morero, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg. “Sarafina! is more than a musical – it’s a reminder of what youth-led courage looks like. At a time when the country is at a political crossroads, we invite all generations to reflect on values of unity, resistance, and hope.”

Remembering June 16, 1976

The June 16 Uprising was a key moment in the Struggle against apartheid, sparked by student protests against the Afrikaans language policy. The youth’s actions continue to inspire activism today.

The event schedule includes:

  • June 14: Workshops and community activities.

  • June 15: Outdoor screening of Sarafina!, Amapiano music, and art installations.

  • June 16 – Youth Day: A programme of music, dance, and storytelling, followed by a concert performance of Sarafina!. The day also includes a community brunch, dance competitions, and performances by Soweto Theatre students.

The precinct, including the Gibson Kente Theatre, Yellow and Blue Theatres, and new container spaces, will host family programming starting at 11am daily. City-led safety and beautification efforts will support the event.

More Than a Show

“This is not just a show – it’s a movement,” said Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres. “Reviving Sarafina! in Soweto gives a platform to today’s youth while honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom.”

The event invites attendees to reflect on the struggles of the past while engaging with the issues that continue to shape South Africa’s future.
