President Ramaphosa announces special funeral for late ambassador Nathi Mthethwa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late Ambassador Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa will receive a Special Official Funeral Category 2.

The ceremony is set to take place in his hometown of KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Mthethwa, 58, died in Paris, France, on September 30, 2025.

Appointed as Ambassador to France in December 2023, Mthethwa brought over 15 years of ministerial experience to the position, having previously held significant roles in Cabinet, which included overseeing Sport, Arts and Culture; Police; and Safety and Security. His tenure in the National Executive marked a chapter of unwavering commitment and political engagement, spotlighting his dedication to South Africa and its citizens.

In a message of sympathy, Ramaphosa extended his condolences to Mthethwa’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, as well as the Mthethwa and Buthelezi families. He also expressed the nation’s gratitude for Mthethwa’s diverse contributions and steadfast service, reiterating that his legacy will have a lasting impact on the country.

The circumstances surrounding Mthethwa’s sudden death are currently under investigation by French authorities, as confirmed by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community. The circumstances of his untimely death are under investigation by the French authorities. The Government of South Africa extends its deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Ambassador Mthethwa, and to his friends and colleagues during this period of immense grief. He is survived by his wife and children. We honour his legacy of unwavering patriotism and service to our nation,” Dirco minister Ronald Lamola remarked.

As part of the nation’s memorial, President Ramaphosa has mandated that the National Flag be flown at half-mast from Thursday, 9 October, until the evening of 12 October, reflecting the country’s grief and respect.

The Special Official Funeral will feature ceremonial honours conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), ensuring a dignified farewell to a man whose life was dedicated to public service and international diplomacy.
