TEN people have been confirmed dead following a bus crash on the N6 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The crash took place approximately 15 km south of Reddersburg towards Smithfield.
Sipho Towa, District Manager for Free State EMS Control Centre, said the crash involved a City to City bus with 33 passengers that collided with a truck.
"The incident has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with over 31 injuries reported and a death toll that has risen to 10 confirmed fatalities, although this number may still be unconfirmed."
A total road closure is in effect, and alternative routes have been provided to divert traffic.
"Emergency services and law enforcement agencies are on the scene, with the priority being to extricate the last survivor."
For those traveling from Reddersburg, traffic is being diverted to the R717 towards Edenburg (27 km), then to the N1 to Springfontein (69.5 km), and finally taking the R715 to Smithfield (103 km) to rejoin the N6. For travelers from Smithfield, the alternative route is to take the R715 to Springfontein, then the N1 to Bloemfontein (140 km).
