It’s finally been confirmed, South Africa’s ultra running sensation Gerda Steyn’s next major race will come on home soil at the Cape Town Marathon on October 19.
Though the 35-year-old normally gives pretty strong hints as to where she will be racing yet, Steyn waited for the race organisers to confirm her participation on Thursday.
The four-time Comrades Marathon and six-time Two Oceans Marathon champion would dearly like to grab the SA record in the marathon she held before Glenrose Xaba smashed that mark in October last year.
Steyn said on social media on Friday: “People often ask me where my dream marathon destination would be…
“The answer is simple, because there is nothing better than right here on home soil!! I can’t wait to line up for the @capetownmarathon on 19 October!!! My preparation is already well underway. But most of all, I can’t wait to share the road with you all!!!”
Earlier this month, Steyn said: “The second half of the year usually means 42.2km training which I have always really loved and this year is looking to be extra good!
“Can you guess which marathon I’m running this year…?
“I have just started my training with some good workouts and a few warm-up races too! Next up is a 5km (send help please!) and then back to training we go.”
The fact that Steyn can compete with the best runners in the country in any distance from 5km to 90km is nothing short of phenomenal.
It’s also the reason why she’s been so successful; Steyn has the speed to go with that endurance. That’s why Steyn has been so prolific since she burst onto the scene with her first Two Oceans title in 2018.
