India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah produced two brilliant deliveries to dismiss the Proteas opening batters, while wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav got the big wicket of Temba Bavuma, tilting the first session in India's favour.

The Proteas had a solid start to the session, with Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram striking crisp drives and cut shots as Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj struggled to find lateral movement in the opening 20 minutes of the first session.

As a result, India captain Shubman Gill brought on spinner Axar Patel in the eighth over, as the hosts looked to gauge the turn that the wicket has to offer.

Just as the Proteas openers looked set, Bumrah (2/9) pulled up his socks and produced two unplayable deliveries to account for Rickelton and Markram.

The right-arm quick first changed his line of attack, bowling around the wicket to the left-handed Rickelton, beating him with away swingers before he bowled a nip backer that smashed into Rickelton's (23) off-stump.

The quick would account for Markram (31) next with a back-of-length delivery that shot up and surprised Markram as it caught his gloves, with Rishabh Pant taking the catch behind the stumps.

Shortly after, Gill introduced Kuldeep Yadav (1/20) to the attack, and the spinner did not take too long to get his first scalp of the day.

He accounted for Bavuma, caught at leg-slip by Dhruv Jurel.

Bavuma's approach to Yadav led to his dismissal. The skipper's left shoulder was too side-on, instead of being front-on on to allow him to play the left-arm wrist spinner straight and in front of his eyes.

Instead, with his side-on stance, Bavuma played a straight delivery turning towards leg-stump around his front pad, handing Jurel a sharp chance at leg-slip.

The skipper was visibly annoyed with himself after that dismissal. However, Wiaan Mulder (22 not out) and the in-form Tony de Zorzi (15 not out) guided the Proteas to the lunch interval without further damage.

The two will look to build a partnership when they resume in the second session.
