Proteas Women’s all-rounder Marizanne Kapp praised fellow batter Tazmin Brits after the pair hit unbeaten centuries and combined for a record 213-run third-wicket partnership.

Kapp finished unbeaten on 121, smashing 13 fours and two sixes, while Brits scored 101 not out, including nine fours. In their record stand, Kapp described Brits as a supportive batting partner throughout the innings.

The 35-year-old displayed impressive fitness levels as she carried the team on her back.

“I can promise you I didn't feel fit in that innings. It was extremely tough out there today. When I was on about 20 runs, I really thought, how am I going to get through this day?” Kapp said.

“It was extremely hot earlier in the evening, but luckily, Tazmin and I helped each other out, just kept on speaking to each other — and all glory to God.”

The performance from Kapp and Brits on Tuesday sent a chilling message to the rest of women’s cricket, as teams around the world build towards the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, which is set to get underway on 30 September.

The pair read the conditions well and adapted perfectly, especially after spinners caused problems early in the innings.

Kapp said they quickly realised the importance of settling in and building an innings, as conditions favoured batters later on.

“I feel like it wasn't that easy. It was a tricky wicket, stayed low at times, and the overhead conditions definitely weren't easy. So, this was a brilliant prep for the World Cup,” she said.

“We saw the way Pakistan came out and played, so we knew if we gave ourselves a chance and got used to the pace of the wicket, it would get easier.

“Pace, especially on that wicket, was a lot easier to face. So, we knew if we just stuck in there, we could catch up.”

The visitors have secured a 1–0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI set to get underway at 12:30 on Friday, 19 September.
