The Proteas have suffered a significant setback with stand-in T20 International (T20I) captain David Miller and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee being ruled out of the upcoming white-ball tour of Pakistan.

Miller, originally slated to lead the T20I side, sustained a grade 1 right hamstring strain during a training session. Following scans conducted on Wednesday, it was confirmed that he would not be able to participate in the three-match T20I series.

Miller also missed the recent white-ball tours to Australia and England and has not featured for the Proteas in any format since the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal defeat to New Zealand back in March.

The 36-year-old will undergo a phased rehabilitation programme in hopes of a swift return.

Coetzee's absence compounds the Proteas' challenges, as the 25-year-old has been sidelined due to a pectoral muscle injury incurred while bowling during the one-off T20I against Namibia earlier this month.

Subsequent medical consultations resulted in a clear rehabilitation pathway under the guidance of Cricket South Africa's High Performance and the Titans medical teams.

Unfortunately for Coetzee, his recovery will rule him out of both the T20I series and the subsequent three-match One-Day International (ODI) series.

ODI captain Matthew Breetzke and the uncapped Tony de Zorzi have been added to the T20I squad.

Donovan Ferreira, who led the Proteas in the T20I once-off against Namibia, has been appointed captain for the Pakistan T20I series in Miller's enforced absence.

Dolphins seamer Ottneil Baartman will step in for Coetzee in the ODI squad.
