After half a season of rugby in Japan, Stormers lock Adré Smith has returned with renewed ambition — determined to keep playing his club rugby at the highest level while chasing his lifelong dream of becoming a Springbok.

The enforcer lock is set to earn his 50th cap for the Cape side on Friday when they face the Ospreys at DHL Stadium. He’ll be eager to deliver another strong performance after helping the Stormers to a commanding 35-0 victory over Leinster last week.

Given a rare start in the No 4 jersey, Smith seized the opportunity with powerful carries, sharp ball skills in attack, and the trademark physicality in tackles and at the breakdown that have become his calling card. He’ll be expected to bring the same energy again on Friday, especially against a tricky Welsh outfit.

Upon his return from Japan, Smith spoke with Stormers management about his ambition to contribute more to the team. While he has often been an impact player off the bench, he knows that to realise his Springbok dream, he must consistently earn a place in the starting XV.

“It was a good decision to leave; sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone,” Smith said.

“When you come back, you realise you have to work harder. I know I have the talent to do it. Looking from the outside gave me a new perspective. I love making an impact off the bench, but I want to start as much as possible.

“If I don’t start regularly, I won’t get where I want to be. Wearing the green and gold is what I aspire to.

"Sitting on the bench won’t necessarily get me there. I’ve spoken with the coaches and asked them to push me in every aspect of the game.”

The Ospreys, coming off a tough loss to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld, will arrive in Cape Town determined to respond. They are unbeaten in their last three games against the Stormers — something Smith and his teammates will be eager to change.

For Smith, reaching 50 caps is a milestone to savour.

“It’s always been a dream of mine, even before I joined, to play 50 or 100 games for the Stormers. I could’ve reached this milestone earlier if it weren’t for injuries, but I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited for the next 50,” Smith concluded.
