Premier League club West Ham United once again had South Africans in stitches after yet another TikTok post with Mzansi flavour.
In the past, the club posted Dimitri Payet’s goal collection with a voiceover in Setswana reacting, “Yoh, o ja monate mos” (you’re eating nice).
They later shared another video of Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot missing a clear-cut chance against them, narrated by former Baroka FC coach Kgoloko Thobejane saying, “Football can kill you, a real death.”
More recently, they pulled out Lasizwe's hilarious “Prudence, iyadeclina” as they showcased a montage of Mads Hermansen denying Manchester City multiple goalscoring opportunities during their 1–1 draw at the London Stadium.
These videos have drawn the attention of many South Africans, who now claim they have adopted the team as their own.
Other Premier League clubs have also jumped on the trend by embracing South African phrases and music. Nottingham Forest have also targeted South Africans, as have Liverpool and Arsenal.
It’s not publicly confirmed that West Ham have South Africans managing their TikTok accounts. Most clubs operate with global social media teams that track trends from around the world and adapt content accordingly.
But whoever is behind the account, West Ham’s use of South African humour and references is clearly striking a chord – turning viral moments into a growing connection with local fans.
