The absence of Super Eagles’ prolific striker, Victor Osimhen, from Tuesday's high-stakes encounter against Bafana Bafana at the Free State Stadium (kick-off 6pm) is sending ripples of concern through the Nigerian camp ahead of their Fifa World Cup 2026 qualifier.

The 24-year-old Osimhen is not only a fan favourite but also the team’s leading goal-scorer, a role made even more significant following Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda. He sustained an injury during that match and has not travelled to South Africa.

The implications of his absence cannot be overstated. His prowess in the forward line has been integral to Nigeria’s attack, making him one of the squad’s most valuable players.

Without him, the Super Eagles may struggle to breach a well-organised Bafana Bafana defence. Their coach, Éric Chelle, will need to consider tactical and formation adjustments.

The duel between Peseiro and Bafana coach Hugo Broos will be a fascinating subplot to the match. With Nigeria’s aspirations hanging in the balance, three key players will be crucial in the absence of Osimhen.

Ola Aina

The 28-year old Aina has developed into a key figure for the Super Eagles. The Nottingham Forest right-back is known for his strong defensive work and dynamic attacking runs, making him invaluable at both club and international level.

Born in London, Aina’s journey from youth talent to Nigeria stalwart highlights his deep-rooted passion for the game. Last season, he played 35 of Forest’s 38 Premier League games, combining defensive solidity with surging runs down the wing that unsettled opposing backlines.

Ademola Lookman

In CAF circles, few players have earned as much admiration as Atalanta winger Lookman. Crowned CAF Player of the Year, he has dazzled in Serie A and on the international stage.

Lookman’s ability to score with either foot, coupled with his pace, dribbling and agility, makes him a nightmare for defenders. His explosive bursts often break defensive lines, while his clever movement and passing add creativity to Nigeria’s attack.

Alex Iwobi

Born in Lagos and raised in London, Iwobi has become one of Nigeria’s most versatile talents. Now a central figure for Fulham, his ability to dictate play and create scoring opportunities makes him a pivotal attacking outlet.

Having honed his skills during stints with Arsenal and Everton, Iwobi brings invaluable experience. However, concerns about the Bloemfontein pitch may affect his creative flair. Despite that, his form and composure under pressure could prove decisive, offering Nigeria a multi-dimensional threat in midfield.
