Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has replaced the injured Lyle Foster with Ashley Cupido for their final Fifa World Cup 2026 qualifier against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night (6pm kick-off).

“Cupido has received a late call-up to the South Africa squad ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier against Rwanda, after being selected as an injury replacement by coach Hugo Broos,” Stellenbosch confirmed.

Foster picked up an injury during Bafana’s goalless draw with Zimbabwe in the penultimate qualifier, which was held at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Friday.

His absence could have mixed implications. He received significant criticism on social media after missing several chances against The Warriors, although Broos still regards him as one of the best players the national team has had in recent years.

Granted, Foster was slightly offbeat against Zimbabwe, but his absence may be felt against Rwanda. Bafana desperately need a win to qualify automatically for the World Cup.

They are second on the log with 15 points, two behind leaders Benin, who face Nigeria in a simultaneous qualifier in Uyo.

Should Nigeria beat Benin, and Bafana beat Rwanda, Broos’ men will return to the biggest football stage for the first time since 2002 — having only qualified as hosts in 2010.

Bafana could still secure their ticket to the tournament — which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — if they beat Rwanda by at least three clear goals and Nigeria and Benin play to a draw.

So, enter Cupido. The Stellies striker must ensure he brings his scoring boots — if he’s thrown into the fray by Broos later on Tuesday.
