Stellenbosch FC wing-back Fawaaz Basadien is set to undergo a medical with Mamelodi Sundowns at Chloorkop on Friday morning with the deal to be concluded shortly.
Independent Media has been informed by reputable sources that Basadien - a longtime Sundowns target - will sign with the Betway Premiership champions over the weekend.
The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana international was part of Stellenbosch FC’s pre-season tour to Gauteng, but played no part in training on Thursday as he looked on from the sidelines.
Basadien will be the second successive current Stellenbosch FC Player of the Year to swap the Winelands for Chloorkop prior to the following season after striker Iqraam Rayers also joined Bafana ba Style last year.
The Men in the Maroon, who have finished third for consecutive seasons in the Premiership, have been a consistent source of talent for Sundowns over the last few seasons with Argentine midfielder Junior Mendieta and Jayden Adams also leaving Steve Barker’s team for the nation’s capital.
Mendieta has since left Downs for Al-Faisaly FC in Saudi Arabia’s Second Division Pro League.
Basadien joined Stellenbosch FC from Moroka Swallows in 2022 and penned a new contract at the beginning of last year that was set to run until June 2026.
This has placed Basadien out of the reach of the likes of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with Sundowns the only local club capable of meeting the financial demands of a buyout clause.
Throughout the speculation over his future, Basadien has always remained loyal to Stellies, previously stating “For me, it was to remain grounded and know that my contract is here at Stellenbosch. I’m playing for Stellenbosch and just focusing on what I can control. That was the main thing” but it seems the time has now come to move on to greener pastures.
