Three games, three wins, and second spot in the log have been the result for Kaizer Chiefs in their perfect start to their new Betway Premiership campaign.
With their nine points, Chiefs are second behind unlikely table-toppers Sekhukhune United only on goal difference.
It’s a far cry from the ninth place in the league Chiefs finished last season, which was the second in a row in which they finished outside the lucrative top eight.
Chiefs beat Richards Bay (1-0), Polokwane City (1-0), and Stellenbosch (2-0) so far in the league.
Now, their biggest test so far awaits on Wednesday. Chiefs will host the champions Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium in a 7.30pm kick-off.
As usual, Sundowns have made a strong start to their season with two wins and a draw as they are in third spot on seven points.
Sundowns are also still heavy favourites to win their ninth league title in a row, as they are one of the richest clubs in Africa.
With a current squad size of 41, the total squad value is estimated at R744 million.
The total squad value of Chiefs is around R303 million. That’s less than half of that of Sundowns’.
Still, that will count little when the whistle sounds in a couple of days in the famed 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium which routinely hosts Chiefs matches with masses of open seats.
The crowds will likely flock in to see the high-profile match, as a rejuvenated Chiefs (the most popular club in the land) have the potential to reignite the excitement in local football.
