Despite their dominance in regulation time, Orlando Pirates struggled to convert opportunities into goals during Saturday’s MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC. Pirates’ starting XI boasted an array of attacking talent, yet the Buccaneers’ 90-minute display frustrated fans as they failed to be clinical, despite leading the shots count 21-11.

It took the impact of substitutes Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Tshegofatso Mabasa in extra time to tilt the balance. Their energy and invention proved decisive, guiding Pirates to a historic win.

Tshepang Moremi

A late second-half substitute, Moremi was the match-winner. He scored twice and provided an assist, igniting the predominantly Pirates crowd. His first strike was a dazzling solo effort, weaving through defenders before unleashing a thunderous shot. Composed and fearless, he turned the contest on its head.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Captain Mbokazi lived up to his billing as the “Wizard of the Sea”, marshalling the defence with authority. His tackles, interceptions and leadership kept Stellenbosch’s attack at bay. Calm under pressure, he anchored a backline that refused to yield.

Kamohelo Sebelebele

The versatile winger again underlined his value. Switching seamlessly between right wing and right-back, Sebelebele offered speed, crossing quality and defensive cover. His dual threat kept Stellenbosch guessing, as he troubled defenders while diligently tracking back.

Tshegofatso Mabasa

Mabasa proved the perfect super-sub, scoring one of the extra-time goals that sealed the win. His sharp movement and ability to strike at key moments demonstrated Pirates’ squad depth and his own knack for changing games.

Oswin Appollis

Appollis brought creativity and vision off the bench, supplying two assists. His incisive passing carved open Stellenbosch’s defence, first with a pinpoint cross and then with a perfectly timed through-ball. His contribution reflected both his class and the coaching staff’s astute substitutions.

With their substitutes rising to the occasion, Pirates showcased depth, resilience and the ability to finish strong.
