Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs are once again on the hunt for a new head coach following the sacking of Nasreddine Nabi, and the usual names that could replace him in the hottest seat in South African football have been mentioned.
Many seem to believe that Pitso Mosimane, formerly in charge of Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Egyptian giants Al Ahly, among others, is the perfect man for the job.
They are not wrong. Mosimane’s impressive CV could instantly transform Kaizer Chiefs into contenders.
Another name that’s been mentioned is that of Benni McCarthy, who is currently tied to the Kenya national team, and would bring Premier League experience having spent two years at Manchester United.
Others who have also been given a shout are Ernst Middendorp, the last man to mount a serious title challenge with the club, as well as Jose Riveiro, who won a host of honours with Orlando Pirates.
One man who deserves to be part of the conversation, though, is Stellenbosch FC tactician Steve Barker, currently the longest-serving head coach in the Betway Premiership.
Since his 2017 appointment, Barker has provided Stellies with steady leadership, creating an environment conducive to long-term success.
Known for his tactical acumen, Barker has led Stellenbosch FC to multiple cup finals, including the MTN8 in 2024 and 2025. This demonstrates his ability to compete at the highest level despite limited resources. He has also been instrumental in nurturing some of the finest young players in South Africa.
Chiefs, with their history and fan pressure, could benefit from a coach who can refresh the squad with academy prospects while maintaining performance levels. He has thrived with limited means and could do much more with a bigger budget.
In short, In short, Barker could bring tactical acumen, youth development, reliability, and resilience to Chiefs, which are ingrained in the club’s DNA.
If Kaizer Chiefs are serious about building a team that can compete sustainably at the top, the decision shouldn’t just be about big names or immediate impact. Steve Barker offers a blend of proven expertise, stability, and a track record of developing talent that could reshape the club’s future.
With the right backing, he has the tools to not only challenge for trophies but also to lay the foundations for a new era at Chiefs – one that balances ambition with long-term growth.
