Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has hinted that his side will challenge for the Betway Premiership title this season, following their victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday evening.

Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa provided the goals for Pirates as they ran out 2-0 winners over Galaxy in their league encounter at Orlando Stadium.

It was a good performance from Pirates, who had more shots on goal (15) than their opponents ( just six). Pirates also just shaded possession, with 52% of the ball.

After a slow start to their league campaign, Pirates have now moved up to third with 15 points after seven games. In fact, Pirates have three games in hand over Mamelodi Sundowns, who top the table with 21 points after 10 matches. Galaxy are seventh with 13 points from eight games.

Pirates Secure Late Victory Over Strong Opposition

“We will keep working, and I hope my team will keep this spirit until the end of the season,” said Ouaddou.

Though Makgopa scored earlier in the encounter (in the 20th minute), it was only after the 90th minute that Pirates sealed the encounter when Mabasa struck.

“It was a very difficult game and we were expecting a very strong opposition, and we got that.

“I’m very happy about the team spirit, the unity and solidarity of my players. We knew the opponent would come to us with a lot of ambition to bother us at home.

“They already did it last year, I think. The players respected our plan. I’m happy with the victory tonight to keep close to the teams at the top of the league.”

Pirates are next in action on Saturday in the Carling Knockout Cup first round against Siwelele at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm.
