South African football fans need to keep an eye on Soweto giants Orlando Pirates because something special is happening with the club.

After an impressive 2-0 win over TS Galaxy, the club’s supporters across the country are on cloud nine, and they’re right to believe that this season could finally be the one where they eclipse Mamelodi Sundowns as the kings of South Africa.

The mighty Sea Robbers had a difficult start to the season under Abdeslam Ouaddou with losses in their opening two league games. But since then, they’ve regrouped and look a different side.

You can go as far as to say they look better than when they were under Spaniard Jose Riveiro. Under the Moroccan, Ezimnyama ngenkani ezikamagebhula have been solid at the back. With rising star Mbekezeli Mbokazi in the heart of defence, Pirates haven’t conceded a single goal in seven games in all competitions.

And in attack, which often begins at the back with Sipho Chaine in goal, they’ve been good at keeping the ball while building patiently to create opportunities for their front men. It’s scary how good they’ve been this season, and their fans should be excited for the end of the season.

Their brilliant run of form has come at a time when the perennial champions have struggled in recent weeks. It’s starting to look like their reign might be facing its biggest challenge yet.

South Africa needs Pirates to knock Mamelodi Sundowns off their perch.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance has been nothing short of historic – and while their success deserves respect, it has made the league increasingly predictable. For the health of the game, the credibility of the competition, and the passion of the supporters, it is time for Orlando Pirates to step up and win the league.

The league must not become a foregone conclusion, remembered only for Sundowns’ trophy parades. Supporters want drama, rivalries, and the thrill of uncertainty. A title-winning Pirates side would bring just that.

If Pirates can sustain this momentum, it won’t just be a triumph for the club – it will be a victory for South African football as a whole. A league where every season is up for grabs, where giants are constantly tested, and where supporters dare to dream again is the league fans deserve. And right now, Orlando Pirates look ready to give it to them.
