Following Kaizer Chiefs’ qualification for the Caf Confederation Cup group phase, former AmaKhosi player Morgan Gould said it would be a crucial step for the club in reclaiming some of their former glory.
Chiefs trounced AS Simba 3-1 in their second leg qualifying fixture over the weekend in Dobsonville to book their ticket to the competition proper, after the first leg ended goalless.
The Soweto Giants won their first piece of silverware in a decade last season when they won the Nedbank Cup, which in turn allowed them entrance to the Caf Confederation Cup.
It seems the doors are opening up for Chiefs since that cup title, and the club will continue progressing, believed Gould.
“The club obviously has a mission to go and play the next Club World Cup and a couple of Club World Cups after that. This is how you start, you go to your semi-final of your Champions League, reach the final of the Caf Confederation Cup, those are the type of things that you need,” Gould told SportsBoom.co.za.
“This is a step in the right direction. It's still a journey that's obviously going to be testing, but it's a journey that I think is not impossible to get to the land of milk and honey.”
The 42-year-old retired defender, who spent four years with Chiefs from 2012 to 2016, said playing in new competitions would be the only way for the club to experience true development.
“It’s going to take different approaches, different formations, and different players. It's also good for a team like Kaizer Chiefs to go into these tournaments to put the players to the test because if you don't play in these top tournaments, when are you going to get the experience?”
