Mamelodi Sundowns will be the team to beat when they host rivals Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (3.30pm kick-off).

The Brazilians have battered Pirates on their turf, including a 4-1 victory last season. They are also the defending champions of the league, and that’s why they’ll want to send out a huge statement about their intentions of winning a record-extending ninth title in a row to a side that’s been their closest challenger in the last three seasons.

Coach Miguel Cardoso has to ensure that his tactics are spot on, though, as he’ll be without several key figures, some of whom we look at below.

Teboho Mokoena

Mokoena is arguably the best midfielder in the top-flight football of South African football. And therefore, there's no doubt that his suspension for this clash could be significant. He is someone who can clean up in defence and link up play. He can also add to attacking options, taking long-range shots from open play or set-pieces.

Kutlwano Letlhaku

Letlhaku is still finding his feet in top-flight, following his promotion. He has already shown flashes of growth and maturity, though, after making notable cameos, either scoring a goal or providing an assist. And having been spotted in a moonboot recently, his promising rise has hit a snag.

Thapelo Morena

Morena is arguably one of the most consistent and humble players in the league. He doesn’t say much, but his workrate—in a variety of fluid positions—is unquestionable. So, having picked up a knock recently, he’ll have to spend some time on the sidelines, something that Cardoso argues might disrupt the management of first-choice right-back Khuliso Mudau.

Malibongwe Khoza

Khoza recently got his maiden Bafana Bafana call-up. And that was pleasing given the fact that he impressed at the lower-rated Chan tournament. But having recently sustained an injury, that will put his progress on hold, especially after Cardoso confirmed that he won't be available for selection during the November international window.

Miguel Reisinho

Reisinho scored his first goal in the yellow and green colours of Sundowns when they beat Remo Stars 5-1 on the road. But it may be a while before he scores his second goal, as he sustained an injury in the 2-0 home victory. And for him to be ruled out of a game like the one on Saturday is probably heart-breaking, as the intensity will be high and the stadium filled to capacity and buzzing.
