DURBAN residents are urged to be vigilant of pickpockets at shopping centres, fast food outlets and restaurants.

Over the past few weeks two suspects were linked to thefts reported in Kloof and Morningside.

According to reports, the pair, who are well-dressed and presentable, approach potential victims in a friendly and engaging manner.

While distracting them an accomplice steals the cellphone, wallet or other visible valuables.

In an incident at a Kloof shopping centre, the suspects targeted a man in the parking area. When the man resisted, he was stabbed, but fortunately surviving the ordeal.

There were recent incidents on Florida Road in Morningside.

Grant Laret, Blue Security’s community manager for Kloof, Grant Laret, said the suspects were mobile and would likely target other areas in Durban.

“Residents need to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly in busy environments where criminals can blend in easily,” he said.

Karl Van Der Merwe, Blue Security’s community manager for Morningside, said people need to be aware of and secure their belongings.

“Avoid openly displaying valuable items such as cellphones, smart watches or wallets. Keep handbags zipped and close to your body, and be cautious of people who seem overly friendly or attempt to invade your personal space. If you notice anything suspicious, report it immediately to centre management, security, police or your private security provider,” he said.
