I bagged a really good deal on a powerbank this week, and while it’s a bit of a powerhouse at a decent price, it got me thinking: Which are the best value and use cases for powerbanks on the market in South Africa at the moment?

For reference, the powerbank I bought was a Belkin 20,000mAh 15W USB-C. It was on sale from the iStore for R399, saving me a tidy R400.

What stood out for me though was that this device claims to be able to provide a MacBook with an extra nine hours of battery. While I’m not sure I’d get that on my 16” MacBook Pro M1 from 2021, I’m confident I’d get at least seven hours.

The Belkin also claims to provide “up to 28 hours to your iPad or up to 77 hours to your phone.”

Winx Go Simple 10,000mAh: The Best Powerbank Under R500 for Portability and Power

This in itself is quite amazing considering I spent under R500.

The big drawback though is that this powerbank is very heavy (426g) and it feels like it’s made of lead. For this reason, it would be too heavy for your pocket even though it might fit.

However, if you’re happy to keep it in a backpack, it’s definitely worth the investment.

After a bit of research, it’s apparent that whichever powerbank you choose, it’s best to go for a reputable brand as it’s easy to fake some of the power output claims on the box.

For this reason, the Winx Go Simple 5000mAh is the best budget option. It’s a good brand, highly portable, and currently retailing for R139 on Takealot. At 124g, it’s lighter than most smartphones like the iPhone 17, which is over 50g heavier.

If you’re willing to carry a bit more weight for double the power, though, the Winx Go Simple 10,000mAh probably hits the sweet spot. At R179, it delivers double the power of its budget model. At 226g, it’s not too heavy either.

While I’m pretty happy with the Belkin, it’s a bit of a trade-off for portability because of the extra weight.

Therefore, if you want the best bang for your buck for a power bank under R500, the Winx Go Simple 10,000mAh is the clear winner.
