It may seem like an easy way to make some extra cash at first, but content creators in South Africa have the odds stacked against them when it comes to earning good money from starting a YouTube channel.

Of course, there are tons of successful South African YouTubers, but the fact is they have much less earning potential than their American or UK counterparts.

This is because of geographical location.

Advertisers simply pay less on YouTube to creators from South Africa than in the USA or UK.

For example, a South African YouTuber with 1.4 million views on a video will earn around R6,894 for that video. A channel in the UK or USA, though, can earn between R14,651 and R15,512 on a channel with just 275,000 views.

Strategies for South African YouTubers to Increase Earnings

The disparity is staggering, and it doesn’t appear as though it’s likely to change anytime soon.

There are other ways an SA YouTuber can potentially earn more, though.

The first step will be targeting an international audience with their content. This will help convince advertisers to pay more for content that attracts a more global audience.

Any YouTuber will also need sponsorships. While this can be the most skipper-over part of videos or result in low views on a sponsored video altogether, it’s probably the most sustainable form of income for a successful YouTuber.

It’s also worth noting that anyone starting a new channel will have to be patient before they can even start earning peanuts. You have to get 500 subscribers on your channel and a certain number of watch hours before you can even become monetised.

It’s a long journey potentially, but it’s clear, especially if you’re from South Africa, that earning heaps of money from YouTube will only happen if you make it really big.

You just have to ask yourself if it’s worth it or not.
