Gen Z's travel surge: discovering affordable adventures this shoulder season

As the world gets a little quieter before the summer, Gen Zs are seizing the chance to explore new places, hang out in beautiful spots and create unforgettable memories.

It looks like young adventurers are ready to travel the world!

This shoulder season, which falls before the busy summer months, has seen a big jump in travel plans among Gen Z.

According to Airbnb, searches by these young travellers have soared by 26% and one reason for the increase in travel is that it's more affordable during this time.

A recent Focaldata survey found that over 80% of Gen Z respondents say that the cost of travel is a major factor in their choices. 42% of them believe that travelling between September and November is a practical choice.

Gen Zs are looking for a mix of fun and affordability, also known as "affordable luxury", so instead of flocking to the busiest tourist spots, they are hunting for exciting cities and breezy beach locations around the globe.

According to Airbnb, Paris, Osaka, Munich, Mexico City and Porto, Portugal are some of the top destinations for Gen Z travellers.

They are also searching for hidden gems that offer the same beachy vibes without the crowds. 

According to Airbnb, here are some of their peaceful finds:

  • Naha, Japan: Sometimes referred to as “Japan’s Hawaii”, Naha combines island charm with city vibes, mirroring Honolulu’s dynamic atmosphere with its bustling streets, restaurants and shops.
  • Ipojuca, BrazilKnown for its stunning beaches like Porto de Galinhas, Ipojuca has stunning beaches with turquoise waters, much like Rio de Janeiro's natural pools that make it easy to spot marine life, offering a serene alternative to Brazil’s iconic beach city.

  • Ericeira, Portugal: Ericeira stands out as a surf haven and charming seaside town with a relaxed ambience similar to Biarritz, France, the “surfing capital of Europe.” 
  • San Andrés, Colombia: San Andrés boasts turquoise waters reminiscent of Cancún, Mexico’s tropical paradise, but offers a slower pace, a vibrant atmosphere and endless opportunities for water sports. 
  • Praia Grande, Brazil: Praia Grande is known for its long sandy shoreline and lively beach culture, perfect for those looking for sun and fun without travelling far from São Paulo.
