Cabinet has officially appointed Professor John Lamola as the permanent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of South African Airways (SAA), a decision announced on Wednesday.

The travel and tourism industry in South Africa has enthusiastically embraced the appointment of Professor John Lamola as the new chief executive officer of South African Airways (SAA).
Following his term as interim CEO since May 2022, Lamola's official appointment by the SAA Board has been approved by Barbara Creecy, a decision hailed by many as a significant step towards strengthening the airline's financial footing and operational capacity.
In a statement reflecting on Lamola's appointment, the SAA Board expressed confidence that he embodies the skill set, leadership qualities, and vision necessary to steer the national carrier towards sustainable growth.
They acknowledged his deep understanding of the airline's historical challenges and his strategic involvement in shaping its future.
“This appointment represents a turning point for SAA’s long-term financial health,” the Board stated, citing Lamola's proven ability to ensure stability and continuity in the airline's governance and operations.
Interim Chairperson of the SAA Board, Mr Derek Hanekom, stated: “The SAA Board is delighted to be able to appoint a solid and dedicated leader well versed in SAA’s fortunes and eager to continue overseeing its take-off into better skies.
"We wish Professor Lamola and SAA a safe flight into an even brighter future.”
Under Lamola's interim leadership, SAA has resumed its trajectory towards growth by expanding its route network from a mere six destinations in 2021 to 16 planned for January 2025.
The airline's fleet has similarly grown, rising from six to 20 aircraft, including the integration of two Airbus A380s, while workforce numbers have surged from 800 to approximately 2 000, inclusive of 140 pilots.
As the airline's financial discipline continues to show promise, Lamola's permanent appointment reinforces the Board’s faith in his capabilities and aligns with the government's vision for a commercially viable, globally competitive airline.
“Professor Lamola can now continue growing SAA with confidence, knowing that he has the full support of the SAA Board and its shareholders,” Hanekom concluded.
In addition to the board's confidence, the South African Tourism Board Chairperson, Professor Gregory Davids, offered his heartfelt congratulations, stating that Lamola's leadership has been integral in steering SAA towards financial sustainability.
He expressed optimism that Lamola’s appointment would further cement the interdependence between the aviation and tourism sectors, crucial for positioning South Africa as a prime global destination.
Davids remarked, “SAA's stability and expansion under Prof Lamola’s leadership will play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity, improving visitor experiences, and driving economic growth for our nation.”
