King Shaka International Airport: 15 years of transforming travel in KwaZulu-Natal

King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) marked its 15th anniversary today, celebrating a decade and a half of serving as a key gateway to KwaZulu-Natal and a driver of regional growth.

Since opening its doors in May 2010, the airport has played a pivotal role in boosting tourism, facilitating trade, and supporting the economic development of the province. 

Its strategic location near Durban's coastline and cultural landmarks has made it an essential hub for both local and international travellers.

"For us, travel transcends mere arrivals and departures; it’s about fostering meaningful connections and crafting unforgettable experiences," said Nkosinathi Myataza, Regional General Manager of KSIA.

"Over the past 15 years, we have proudly facilitated millions of journeys, ensuring travellers feel secure and supported at every stage."

The airport’s recent operational statistics highlight its robust recovery following the global COVID-19 pandemic.

In the 2024–2025 financial year, KSIA recorded 40,935 aircraft movements, an 81% recovery from pre-pandemic levels. 

Passenger numbers reached over five million, an 83% rebound compared to figures from 2019–2020.

Myataza emphasised that this growth is more than just a return to form. 

"KSIA embodies more than just an aviation hub; it symbolises progress and strategic foresight," he said. "Its evolution over the past 15 years is a testament to sustained investment and a dedication to excellence."

The airport continues to play a key role in the broader Durban Aerotropolis development, working closely with the Aerotropolis Institute Africa to transform the region into a highly connected economic zone.
