After a 10-year wait, Tsogo Sun has finally received approval from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board to relocate its Caledon casino licence to Somerset West. This move will allow the group to invest in a new gaming and hospitality property within the Cape Town metro.

A year ago, Tsogo Sun called for public comments and objections from the Somerset West community, where many residents voiced their opposition to the proposed relocation.

At the time, Chris Wacker of the La Wingerd-Links Neighbourhood Watch said he strongly objected to the move, warning that it could negatively impact the Helderberg community

According to Wacker, residents struggled to make written submissions due to limited access to email, raising concerns that many voices went unheard.

He added that the casino would discourage non-gaming businesses in the area, as gamblers are unlikely to leave the venue to support other shops and restaurants.

Wacker also expressed concern that residential property values could decline due to increased traffic on both the R102 and N2, along with late-night noise.

However, others supported the idea of a casino in the region, arguing that it would bring much-needed employment opportunities and boost revenue for the local economy.

Tsogo Sun described the decision as “a positive development for the Western Cape and the group,” stating that the investment will bring world-class casino and hotel infrastructure to the underserved Helderberg and Overberg regions.

The group has also announced plans to refurbish the existing Caledon Casino and Spa, with upgrades to the hot springs, hotel, and conference facilities.
