Becky (@beckyisgoing), a spirited travel content creator, has just wrapped up a year in South Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Nestled in the picturesque region of Mbombela, Mpumalanga, she has embraced the vibrant culture and close-knit community, showcasing the beauty of service and adventure.

The volunteer and travel content creator has created a name for herself in Mzansi, sharing vlogs of her journey in the country on TikTok

“I’m so happy to have called this place home for the year,” she reflects, capturing the heart of her transformative experience.

As a volunteer, Becky’s mission has been to support underserved communities, collaborating with local organisations focused on education, community development and health.

After spending four years in the corporate world, she sought a different path - one that would allow her to connect deeply with people and places.

This decision has led her to the shores of South Africa, forging lasting memories in a region known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural diversity.

She celebrated her 30th birthday in Mzansi and took the opportunity to explore other countries on the continent.

Becky travelled to Tanzania and summited Mount Kilimanjaro for her milestone celebration.

“I just turned 30 and feel like I am chasing a million things at once: career, love, escape, stability, identity,” Becky shared.

Amid her reflections over the majestic views of Mpumalanga, she acknowledged a sense of peace: “Then I remember I’m already living my dreams ... just a few years delayed from when I dreamed them.”

She also recently visited Mozambique and shared her experience with her followers.

She decided to create her vlog as a guide for those looking to become volunteers.

"I was looking for these types of videos before I made the decision to serve, so I hope it can help anyone curious about what a Peace Corps Response volunteer’s day could look like," she said.

One highlight of her time in Mbombela has been her participation in a local walking club, which became an unexpected source of joy and community.

“From funerals to weddings to running into walkers around town, this club gave me - a random American - so much community in a new place and country,” she enthuses.

As she bids farewell to South Africa, the experiences have enriched her understanding of human connection, reminding her that community transcends borders, cultures and backgrounds.
