Travelling between South Africa and Australia is about to get a lot easier.

From December 2025, travellers can fly directly between Johannesburg and Perth, reducing travel time to just under ten hours.

The new service gives South Africans quicker access not only to Western Australia, but also to cities across the country and to New Zealand, with just one stop.

Qantas has announced a new international route between Johannesburg and Perth, set to begin on 7 December 2025. The flights will operate three times a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays—with a flight time of approximately 9 hours and 55 minutes.

The route will be serviced by a Qantas Airbus A330, offering 27 business class suites in a 1-2-1 layout—each with lie-flat beds and direct aisle access—and 224 economy seats designed for comfort on longer journeys.

This new link between South Africa and Australia is expected to be a welcome addition for travellers heading to Australia.

The Perth service will also connect seamlessly to Qantas’ domestic network, with onward flights to major Australian cities including Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

In addition, the airline has announced a new route between Perth and Auckland, launching at the same time.

This means travellers flying from Johannesburg can now reach New Zealand with just one stop in Perth.

Qantas has operated flights between South Africa and Australia since 1952 and recently increased capacity on its Sydney–Johannesburg route with the return of the Airbus A380 and its First Class service.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said, “We’re excited to be launching this new route, which offers more options for South Africans wanting to visit Australia or reconnect with friends and family. It also creates an easier pathway to New Zealand via Perth.”

The introduction of this direct route means Qantas will now operate daily between Australia and South Africa, offering greater flexibility and choice for travellers on both sides.
